About SuarezDanceTheater
"Old-fashioned, knock-'em dead choreography" Gordon Cox, Newsday New York
SuarezDanceTheater is a not-for-profit, New York City-based ensemble of dancers, musicians and actors that has riveted audiences since 1998. Our mission is to collaboratively conceive dance theater works through a union of rigorous dance, original music and evocative text that illuminate moments of truthfulness within one's physicality and in relationship to others. Performances strive for veracity and abandon from the performer with work that is idiosyncratic in nature from the irreverent to the highly political.
Founded in 1998 by Christine Suarez, SuarezDanceTheater debuted at HERE's American Living Room in association with Lincoln Center Director's Lab. Since its inception, SuarezDanceTheater has deliberately chosen small venues throughout the New York City area to foster the development of the ensemble and to effectively reach a diverse audience. The company is additionally focused on developing a widespread national and international audience to enable cultural exchange.
Ms. Suarez and Company have been Artists in Residence at Tribeca Performing Arts Center since July 03. In March 04, TRIBECA produced the premiere of DOPE: a dance for rebels, the Company's first evening length work. She has been invited to continue as Artist in Residence for the 04/05 season.
SuarezDanceTheater has developed ten original works, self-produced programs of choreography, and performed in dozens of venues including P.S. 122, Dixon Place, Brooklyn Arts Exchange, Deli Dances at Chashama, Context Studios, the Zena Group's Timsloft, the First Glance Atlanta Festival and Independence Park Theatre in Baton Rouge. The Company has taught and performed at Emory University, Indiana University, Queensborough Community College, Borough of Manhattan Community College and Louisiana State University. The Company has partnered with P.S. 16, The Leonard Dunkly Elementary School in Brooklyn and the High School for Leadership and Public Service. The Company is pleased to be on the Harlem School of the Arts' Arts in Education Roster.
The Company has extensive support from individual donors in addition to receiving grants from the Puffin Foundation, Ltd., Meet the Composer, Inc., the deCoizart Charitable Trust, the Association for Hispanic Arts, ExxonMobil Foundation's Cultural Matching Gift Program and the 92nd Street Y Harkness Dance Center.
