Programs - Arts in Education

Christine Suarez engaging a class

"It made me feel more confident about myself and be who I wanted to be."

SuarezDanceTheater reintroduces dance education in New York City public schools that have been forced to marginalize their arts education programs. The Company's goal is to partner with schools and teachers to incorporate dance education into the classroom curriculum. The Company has partnered with P.S. 16, The Leonard Dunkly Elementary School in Brooklyn and the High School for Leadership and Public Service.

  • DANCE LAB

4-6 Workshop sessions that culminate in a Lecture Demonstration that includes student performance of material created by the students.

    1. In-school workshops. The goals is to access learning through movement and music, instill an appreciation for the skills required for performance and explore the creative process needed to choreograph dances.
    2. Attendance at Company rehearsals. Participants in the workshops also have the opportunity to attend a Company rehearsal.

"The theme of 'how we are influenced by the environment of our upbringing' is sure to become more and more interesting to our students as they mature, and your performance will undoubtedly often come to mind as food for thought."

-Alicia McMillen, P.S. 16 Teacher in Brooklyn
