This performance centers on the words of Bessie Head and her “small careful pathway.” Head was born in South Africa in 1937. Her work revolves around the desire and need to belong and survive. She spent her life fighting the powers she detested, not through rallies and boycotts or shouting political slogans but through telling stories: stories about everyday individuals. Her thought and observations of Southern Africa forty years ago are startingly pertinent to 21 st century life. Our goal with A Woman Alone is to transform Ms Head’s stories into visual, Physical and visceral experience.
